It’s a nice solid machine allright, this one’s second-hand but the original owner took good care of it. I’m only planning to use it for heavy roughing work – taking more than an eighth of an inch off a wide board by scrub plane is just not as much fun as it sounds. But final planing will still be by hand and this should only get brought out the once at the start of a project, if only to cut down on the noise factor.

And yeah, I’ll probably wind up buying just one dovetail chisel from ashley iles in 3/8 or 1/2 inch to see how they handle in real use before I go chasing a set of three or four of the things. They’re interesting because of that profile they’ve used for the blade, but I seem to be coping well without them for now, they’re definitely more a treat sort of thing.

Yeah, getting it home was a bit of fun because of the weight and it’s currently living under the bench and getting it up onto the bench to use it is a bit of a deadlift allright. Unfortunately, shy of building a new shed, I’m stuck with the bad solution for now 🙁

And yeah, the replacement knives are a tad steep, but at least I can sharpen them. Mind you, I was thinking more of a helical head to reduce noise a tad but then I saw the pricetag on *that* and promptly rethought that plan 😀

Look up replacement knives if you want to be shocked.
I thought of a stand for the planer but it weighs over 70 lbs (31K) so lifting it that high is problematic for me. I place mine on a stool.

I hope you can find the AI chisels to play with. I’d like to see their new handles and know the wood.
